Art 1 Final Portfolio

1. My self-portrait was my most successful project this semester. Although it was not my favorite project, the self-portrait demonstrated my ability to effectively utilize shading to create a three-dimensional appearance. In order to create my self-portrait, I had to combine basic drawing skills I had learned during the contour unit with the shading techniques I had recently learned. Additionally, I learned how patience is essential to art, as I took a long time to complete the project. The project required careful use of value to accentuate different areas of the face and portray the illusion of depth. Additionally, I used a varying range of pencil types, most notably the F, 2B, and 4B thicknesses. I felt as though the self-portrait project was not only successful on a grade basis, but also by my personal standards. I followed instructions and accurately applied the scaling concepts I had learned in class, allowing me to create a piece that was both successful and satisfying. The project was not my favorite, due to the tediousness of drawing many intricacies, although it was very rewarding in the end.

2. I definitely learned, grew, and developed the most from my contour shoe project. The entire contour unit greatly improved my drawing, an aspect of my artistic ability that received neither practice nor formal training. At the beginning of the year, my drawing abilities were primitive at best, so I was very satisfied with my final shoe. Prior to learning drawing, I used basic techniques involving the use of outlines and stored images. The contour unit really opened my eyes to how drawing is supposed to work. My contour Sperry was the first drawing project where I accurately reproduced an object by drawing from left to right without picking up my  pen. The contour shoe project revealed to me how much I could improve my artistic ability and motivated me to work hard in other aspects of Visual Arts. Looking back on the experience, the contour shoe project was a great way to kick-start the semester, as it motivated me and got me interested in improving my art. Similar to accomplishing a difficult sports or academic goal, my drawing progress was slow in some parts and difficult in others. Nonetheless, I am thankful I improved and very satisfied to see the results of my hard work.

3. I used many skills and techniques in the creation of my landscape painting. The last art project I completed, it makes sense that the landscape painting combined many of the skills I learned throughout the semester. The pumpkins in my picture involved the blending of many colors ranging from yellow to brown, a skill I mastered during the color value study involving figures. Additionally, I learned the skill of creating different tints and shades of a color, allowing me to create a broad spectrum of a color necessary for bringing energy to my pumpkins. I also learned how to mix colors to produce the colors I wanted, such as the different greens used in the background and grass. The color unit was invaluable to this project in many regards. I was frustrated and displeased during many of the parts of the project, as I had significant difficult reproducing certain colors and combining all of the elements into one picture. However, I was satisfied with the end product, and many of the small mistakes give the painting a certain uniqueness. My artistic abilities have matures, as I have learned how to use color and paint what I see, instead of relying on stored images and outlines. Overall, my landscape painting combined many art skills I had learned throughout the year.

4. The Photoshop art project was the least important in learning art concepts. Despite being one of the most entertaining projects, it did not really coincide much with the rest of the curriculum. However, I definitely learned a great deal about computer art and had a lot of fun. Throughout the semester, I discovered how much fun it is to use technology to create art. Nonetheless, the Photoshop project did not teach any skills that I used in later projects. Where many units expanded my knowledge of drawing or taught me new concepts about colors, the computer art unit lacked application in the conventional aspects of art. The project involved the use of Adobe Photoshop to combine multiple images into one cohesive piece. However, the computer art unit taught application in the practical world, where such editing skills might be necessary in the world's technology-heavy future. Personally, I would not recommend removing the computer art lessons from the curriculum, as they were fun; they were simply the most dispensable unit of the semester.

5. I have the greatest personal connection to the stencil portrait project. Additionally, the artwork reflects me as an artist. The artwork reflects me as an artist because I was personally able to select every aspect of it, ranging from the picture and colors to the piece of cardboard. For the picture, I chose one of my closest friends, which provided the artwork with a lot of sentimental value. My artwork pictures a FaceTime conversation I had with my friend, involving both my image and my friend's image. The sense of freedom involved in creating this project was unsurpassed by any other project this semester, making it one of my favorite and most enjoyable projects of all time. The fact that the picture has the frame of the iPod picture screen was a conscious decision on my part, and reflects my style of trying to be unique and interesting. The project involved the use of Adobe Photoshop to separate an image into different color layers, tracing of that image, and the subsequent spraypainting of the stencils created from each layer. I used many of my favorite colors in this project, reflecting my personality and style. Overall, I enjoyed the stencil project very much; because of the subject and the great amount of personal freedom in creating it, I have a deep personal connection to the artwork.

Overall, I learned lots of new things in Visual Arts 1 and had a great learning and social experience. Thanks Mrs. Rossi!
